Sabrina Shillingford (Class of 2020) was an Executive member of the Osgoode Women’s Network. During her time at OWN, she spearheaded many of OWN’s equity initiatives, such as the Women Supporting Women Bursary and served as OWN’s first Diversity and Inclusion Officer. Sabrina contributed significantly to making OWN and the Osgoode community a more inclusive space through her leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. This Award is an acknowledgement of Sabrina’s labour and commitment to OWN and seeks to celebrate OWN members who promote diversity and inclusion through their academic, extracurricular, and volunteer activities. This Award will be presented to an OWN member of colour who demonstrates financial need.

We welcome and encourage all women to apply, including women who were not assigned female at birth. The committee will consist of OWN’s Diversity and Inclusion Officers, President or Vice-President, and approximately five senior executive members. All identifying personal information will be redacted prior to review to protect privacy and ensure an equitable selection process. 

OWN MENTORSHIP AWARD

OWN is committed to offer students an opportunity to engage with and access the advice of peers and alumnae in the legal profession as a means of supporting each of our member’s personal and professional goals. This Award celebrates the mentors who make OWN’s programming possible by acknowledging and celebrating an OWN mentor who has made a meaningful contribution to OWN’s mentorship programming.

THE SABRINA SHILLINGFORD DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AWARD WINNER:
Gabby Aquino

Gabby is a Filipina settler from Scarborough, part of the Williams Treaties territories, and Toronto, part of Treaty 13. She is a sister, daughter and granddaughter and wears different hats including organizing with Toronto Prisoners Rights Project and the Osgoode Hall Law Union among other spaces. These spaces and the people she has been fortunate enough to share them with teach her about the deep connections we share with everyone and everything and the responsibilities within those relationships, including our individual and collective responsibility to ensure that everyone and everything have what they need. Gabby believes that other futures are possible, and is dedicated to continue un/learning how we get there and helping securing those futures.

THE OWN MENTORSHIP AWARD WINNER:
Semhar Woldai

This year's Mentorship Award recipient is Semhar Woldai, B.S. J.D. (Class of 2015). During her time with OWN, Semhar served as Co-Director of Mentorship and Networking and since graduating from Osgoode, Semhar has continued to be an active member of OWN's External Mentorship program. This Award is an acknowledgement of Semhar's contributions to advancing women in law and her efforts to promote OWN's principles.
